In the summer, I like to stick to summer-ish themes... it's difficult because there aren't a lot of GREAT or AMAZING summer reads for babies and toddlers, but with lots of fun songs... I can make it work! It's also great because it is so NOW for the kids who are exploring these themes in their lives at that time... I get so many adults who tell me that they just went to the beach, or took the kids to the pool, and so talking about it in storytime is really fun for the little ones to make the connections to their own experiences!
This week it was time to go Swimming! Case in point for this week because a lot of my swimming books didn't come in for the actual story time!
Books Pulled:
Let's Swim: Nonfiction book about swimming at the pool. It has short chapters-- I read the first one and picture talked being safe and having fun! It's fun to show real kids at the pool!
Swim, Duck, Swim by Susan Lurie: This book is a tad long-- feel free to just get the highlights of the real pictures of a little duck who is afraid to swim! I think it really resonates with little toddlers who may long to swim but feel apprehensive. And the pictures are so cute.
10 Little Fish by Audrey Wood : I had this pulled for fish week, but we didn't get to it and it's a fun one for parents and adults to chime to help count.
Maisy Learns to Swim by Lucy Cousins : This book arrived right after story time was over--- hahaha. It's also a bit long... but the Maisy books are so cute for little ones-- and I think it's fine at the first book read.
Songs:
As usual, we sang our 3 Hello songs... I was thinking today that even though the 3 songs started as an accident, as I was trying to pick one... I really love it now. We get a lot of stragglers, and it's nice to still be saying Hello as people come in the door. Plus the songs work on body parts, animals sounds, etc. so even if nothing else happens, we have already gotten some early literacy in! Ha!
I made up a version of Zoom Zoom Zoom about swimming. Feel free to share and adjust-- it was so fun that we did it twice!
Swim Swim Swim
Swim, swim, swim (Swim motions with arms)
We're going for a swim
Swim, swim, swim
We're going for a swim
If you want to make a splash (clap hands at splash)
Jump on in and go KERPLASH (raise arms up and then hit on knees for kerplash)
Swim, swim, swim
We're going for a swim
In 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 SPLASH (Jump up or lift baby)!
I think I love Zoom because of the easy adjustment for babies! So, I wanted to keep that in my new version!
Orca Whale
Fish in the Sea
Bubble Bubble Pop
I just learned this song last week, and I sang it COMPLETELY wrong the first time... but I love having mishaps in story time-- I think it helps break the ice for adults that things don't have to be perfect for learning and fun! And then in between my story times, I sang it to my manager and a few of the circ staff, and it def made me seem super cool! haha!
Shake Your Sillies Out with the change to CLAP our Crankies out instead of Crazies-- to be more socially minded! I have been doing it this past year, and I love the switch. Cranky is so more relateable and not offensive, than CRAZY.
Although, I only sang this to the first group-- they did not get an extra book!
Come and Sit I sing this song differently as well-- but I like my version.
Everybody come and sit
Come and sit, come and sit
Everybody come and sit
Down on the floor.
Don't sit on the ceiling,
don't sit on the wall,
don't sit on the floor,
Come sit on the floor.
And we tap our knees as we sing... it's a great refocusing song after dancing!
Dance: I almost always use "Freeze" by Greg and Steve! I love that song, and I use that time to count the number of kids and adults! Librarian trick!
Puppet: Bobby with the ABCs
